Calabashes, or gourds, are both useful household objects and items of prestige.
These functional gourds are hollowed out and allowed to dry in the sun. After a time, the gourd’s skin can be carved, painted, and decorated, much like wood.
Some tribes decorate calabash items by using hot knives to burn the pattern into the calabash surface. Those pieces, like this beer bottle and spoon, are treasured for their beauty, and are more valuable than calabash that is simply carved.
