Original batik by Nigerian artist Ruffy, “Yoruba Mask in Pastels.” This batik artwork is on cotton fabric, dyed using the traditional Yoruba dye resist method of cassava root paste. This textile is stretched and wired for hanging. Circa 1996. Dimensions 32″ x 24″ x 1″. Colors are pastels of grey, pink, and yellow.

Ruffy, a widely recognized traditional batik artist, used the adire eleko method of resist dying. In this method, a thick paste is made using cassava flour, and copper sulphate boiled together to produce a smooth thick paste. The paste is applied using a stick or fine bone, and the traditional design is drawn by freehand. African batik art is done by men.
