About Thornwood Carvings
Thornwood carving is believed to have begun in Nigeria by Justus D. Akeredolu, a craft teacher at the Government School in Owo in the 1930s.
He wanted to find a substance that was easy to carve and suitable for small detail. He began experimenting with the wood from the thorns of the silk cotton tree.
Akeredolu taught the craft of carving from the wood to the students, and today it survives as a narrative craft of detail and skill.
The collection at the Art Factory Gallery encompasses subject matter similar to what you see in Mr. Akeredolu’s original sculptures: every day scenes from life in Nigeria.
